Represented the Illinois Central Railroad in a damage suit. 16&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; President of the  &lt;st1:country-region&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;United  States&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:country-region&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span&gt;            &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New  York State during the years 1817 to 1828, is &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;known as the “father” of the &lt;st1:place&gt;Erie Canal&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; and was responsible for the movement to develop a  network of railroads in the eastern states.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;The town of  &lt;st1:city&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Clinton&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; was so named in 1835 by James Allen, a state  legislator, and Jesse Fell, a land speculator from  &lt;st1:city&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Bloomington&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;&lt;st1:placename&gt;DeWitt&lt;/st1:placename&gt; &lt;st1:placetype&gt;County&lt;/st1:placetype&gt;&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; was created from parts of  &lt;st1:city&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Macon&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; and &lt;st1:place&gt;McLean&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;  counties in 1839 with &lt;st1:city&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Clinton&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; declared the county seat in a hotly contested election  between Clinton and the town of &lt;st1:city&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Marion&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;, now DeWitt.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span&gt;            &lt;/span&gt;From 1834 to 1847  &lt;st1:city&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Lincoln&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; was a member of the &lt;st1:state&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Illinois&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:state&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; legislature in the then state capital, Vandalia.&lt;span&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;He and some colleagues (known as the Long Nine because of their heights)  had two main agendas:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;1. To remove the state capital to  &lt;st1:city&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Springfield&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;, and &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;2. To draft an internal improvements bill for a network  of railroads built around the Central Railroad.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Both bills  passed.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span&gt;            &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;During these years  &lt;st1:city&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Lincoln&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; borrowed and began his self-study of law books.&lt;span&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;On &lt;st1:date month="3" day="1" year="1837"&gt;March 1, 1837&lt;/st1:date&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;, he was formally licensed to practice law in the courts  of the State of &lt;st1:state&gt;&lt;st1:place&gt;Illinois&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:state&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Thus, the former backwoodsman and farm laborer in southern Illinois; flatboat hand on the Mississippi River; captain in the Blackhawk War; storekeeper,&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;postmaster and deputy surveyor in New Salem became the “Hon. A.
